Background and geography

  • Colonial period (Kingdom or Captaincy General of Guatemala, Audiencia of Guatemala, within the Viceroyalty of New Spain). The territory of present-day El Salvador was divided between the Alcaldía Mayor de San Salvador and the Alcaldía Mayor de Sonsonate, which was a separate jurisdiction. That is why the colonial records are mostly at the AGCA (Guatemala) and the AGI (Seville). According to the AGN, it holds few colonial documents: originals from the Alcaldía Mayor de San Salvador and digital copies from Sonsonate (El Diario de Hoy, 2024).
  • Intendancy of San Salvador. It was created by a royal order of 17 September 1785; the first intendant, José Ortiz de la Peña, took office in 1786. It had four districts (partidos or subdelegaciones): Santa Ana (Santa Ana, Metapán), San Salvador (San Salvador, Opico, Tejutla, Chalatenango, Cojutepeque, Sensuntepeque), San Vicente (Olocuilta, Zacatecoluca, San Vicente), and San Miguel (San Miguel, Usulután, Gotera, San Alejo). Sonsonate was left out. The intendancy ended when it accepted independence on 21 September 1821 (Wikipedia, Medium-Low).
  • Independence and Federation. Province of San Salvador (1821-1823), brief annexation to Mexico (1822-1823), and State of El Salvador in the Federal Republic of Central America (1824-1839/41). The AGN has a Fondo Federación (1823-1838) that historians cite by box, legajo, and file (Pérez Fabregat, 2014).
  • Departments (Wikipedia, Medium). Four were created on 12 June 1824, and with them Sonsonate joined El Salvador: Sonsonate, San Salvador, San Vicente, and San Miguel. Later came Cuscatlán (1835), La Paz (1839; abolished in 1847 and restored in 1852), Santa Ana and Chalatenango (1855), La Libertad (1865), Usulután and La Unión (1865, split from San Miguel), Ahuachapán (1869), Cabañas (1873), and Morazán (1875, called Gotera until 1887). Tip: before you search, find out which department the town belonged to on the date of the document. Today there are 44 municipalities in the 14 departments (Wikipedia). The date and scope of the municipal reform that created them were not verified.
  • Civil registration. The sources disagree (see contradictions). FamilySearch says “Civil registration began in 1859”; MyHeritage says it officially began in 1881. What has been verified is that there are municipal books for Caluco with births from 1865-1867 (FS catalog 5690) and for Santa Ana from 1879 (WeRelate). The records were kept by the town halls; since 1995 they have been called the Registro del Estado Familiar. The 2024 Ley del Registro del Estado Familiar centralizes the system in the RNPN.
  • Losses. The first National Palace burned in 1889. A plaque gives 19 November; the English Wikipedia gives 19 December. The documents that were saved were stored temporarily in the home of bookseller Fernando Ayala (historian Salvador Cañas, cited in Diario El Mundo, 2025). I found no inventory of what was lost. Another case: the UES Archivo Central has a series titled "Incendio universidad", from 1952. Consequence: for 19th-century El Salvador, the Diario Oficial, ministerial reports (memorias), and court records fill the gaps in the government archives.
  • Inherited holdings. The AGN was created by Legislative Decree no. 161 of 4 October 1948 and is governed by the 1985 Ley del AGN. It was in the National Palace from 1968 to 2021 and moved to the Edificio Mercury in April 2021. Part of the holdings was moved to the BINAES, which opened in November 2023. From 1835, the protocols of deceased or retired notaries (escribanos) had to be handed over to the Corte Suprema de Justicia (decree of 15 April 1835).
  • Local level. There are regional and local archives (town halls, dioceses outside the capital). Researchers should find out what exists in the town.

  • AGN: research status. A search on 4 Nov 2026 found no news of a reopening in 2025-2026; the most recent reports (El Diario de Hoy and El Salvador Now, Oct 2024) describe it as closed to the public since June 2023, with its holdings split between the Edificio Mercury and the BINAES.47
  • FamilySearch: AGN El Salvador. There are no microfilmed holdings with the author «Archivo General de la Nación (El Salvador)»; only record 65990 (a book of documents on Francisco Morazán, comp.
