My Experience at RootsTech 2024

It all started in October 2023 when I was browsing Facebook and suddenly came across a post in a family history group inviting historians, genealogists, and enthusiasts to participate in RootsTech 2024 by submitting proposals to present either in person in Salt Lake City, Utah, or online.

Making the decision was easy; I quickly filled out the forms with my personal information and then came to the form to submit the presentation proposal, but suddenly I didn’t know what to write… with so many interesting and beautiful topics related to genealogy in Guatemala, Mexico, and Central America. Then I thought that with what I already knew and my experience researching my own ancestors in the region, I knew I should talk about resources for genealogical research in Guatemala and Central America.

Approximately a month and a half later, I received the good news by email that my presentation had been accepted. Once again, I was filled with emotions and felt motivated to continue with my preparation. I took the time to analyze what topics, archives, and information I should include, and despite setbacks, I was able to finish my presentation and syllabus on time, which helped me feel ready and confident that I would give an excellent presentation.

On the day of the presentation, still nervous, I prepared with everything I needed, went over my presentation again and again, and with determination, successfully delivered my presentation. I felt happy and grateful to continue learning and practicing my skills in genealogy. I hope to have more presentations in the future, as well as to support and inspire others to participate and present at RootsTech and other genealogy spaces.
