Background and geography

  • 1723-1726, founding of Montevideo. The Portuguese built a fort on 22 November 1723. Bruno Mauricio de Zabala drove them out in January 1724. His diary gives 24 December 1726 as the founding date, although no official founding record exists. The first settlers were families from Buenos Aires, followed by families from the Canary Islands. From 1730 the city no longer depended on Buenos Aires (Wikipedia, “Montevideo”). The census and tax lists (padrones) from 1726 onward are at the AGN (FS 1408224).
  • 1750-1814, Governorate of Montevideo. Ferdinand VI created it in 1750; the first governor was José Joaquín de Viana (1751-1764). At first it controlled only about 70 km (43 miles) around the city. It was under the Viceroyalty of Peru until 1776 and then under the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata (1776-1814). The Real Audiencia [royal high court] was the one in Buenos Aires (Wikipedia, “Governor of Montevideo”). For this reason there are colonial records in Buenos Aires (AGN Argentina) and in the AGI (Audiencia de Buenos Aires section). The AGI holdings still need to be verified in PARES.
  • 1811-1816, Artigas revolution. Battle of Las Piedras (1811). The Provincia Oriental [Eastern Province] was part of the United Provinces between 1813 and 1814. Spanish rule in Montevideo ended on 23 June 1814.
  • 1816-1828, Portuguese-Brazilian rule. The invasion began in August 1816 and Montevideo fell on 20 January 1817. On 18 July 1821 the region was annexed as the Provincia Cisplatina, which remained part of the Empire of Brazil from 1822. On 25 August 1825 the Treinta y Tres Orientales [Thirty-Three Orientals] landed. The Preliminary Peace Convention (27 or 28 August 1828) granted independence, and the first Constitution was sworn in 1830 (Wikipedia, “Cisplatina”). Some records from this period may be in Brazilian archives; Brazil is outside the scope of this page.
  • Departments. The AGN censuses were already organized by department in the 1820s and 1830s: Canelones, Colonia, Soriano, San José, Maldonado, Minas, Paysandú, Durazno, Salto, Cerro Largo, and Florida (FS 1408225-1408235 and 3000814). The creation dates of the current 19 departments are to be confirmed. The Wikipedia page on the departments could not be opened.
  • 1839/1843-1851, Guerra Grande [Great War]. The Siege of Montevideo lasted from 1843 to 1851, and there were two parallel governments: the Defensa government in Montevideo and the Cerrito government. Record series from those years may be duplicated or have gaps. The Montevideo press from the siege (El Comercio del Plata 1845-1850, Le Patriote Français 1843-1850) is digitized in EAP1466.
  • Which archive inherited what.
  • A general archive (Archivo General) was created in 1827.
  • In 1858 the records of the Cabildos [town councils] and the Escribanías Públicas [public notary offices] passed to the Juntas Económico-Administrativas [departmental councils] (AGN, Guía de Fondos, 2022).
  • The current AGN, established in 1926 (Wikipedia), brings together the former Archivo General Administrativo (1724-1895) and the former Archivo y Museo Histórico Nacional (1770-1921) in the Archivo Histórico [Historical Archive], at Convención 1474. The holdings of the Poder Judicial [Judiciary], the Tribunales Militares [military courts], and the Colección de Protocolos y Protocolizaciones (from 1730) are in the Archivo Judicial [Judicial Archive], at Av. San Martín 2400.
  • The passenger books of the Dirección Nacional de Migración [National Migration Office] (1888-1953) are also held at the AGN today.
  • The treasury (Hacienda) books for 1806, 1814, 1816, 1826, and 1827 were lost during the wars (Guía de Fondos).
  • Civil registration. The Dirección General del Registro de Estado Civil was created on 1 July 1879 (gub.uy, procedure “Inscripción de partidas parroquiales”). Before that date, proof of vital events depends on the parish, and secondary sources (census and tax lists, marriage files, probate, protocols) replace or corroborate the information. The DGREC still transcribes pre-1879 baptisms on request.
  • Territory. The Misiones Orientales and the borders with Brazil (treaties of 1851) are to be confirmed.
  • Local archives. There are regional and local archives (departmental, municipal, and diocesan archives in the interior). Researchers should find out what exists in the locality.

National archives and institutions

Only national archives and institutions and key foreign repositories are listed. There are also regional, municipal, diocesan, and religious-order archives: find out what exists in your ancestor’s locality.
