Background and geography

  • 1539–1573: first attempts at a governorship (Audiencia de Panamá, 1539; "Nueva Cartago y Costa Rica", 1540). In 1573 the Province of Costa Rica was authorized, with its capital at Cartago, within the Kingdom of Guatemala (Audiencia de Guatemala, reestablished in 1568; Viceroyalty of New Spain).1
  • Nicoya: an alcaldía mayor/corregimiento separated from Nicaragua (1554); it became part of the Intendancy of León (1786 according to Hispanopedia; 1787 according to Wikipedia; see Contradictions). Its colonial records tend to be with Nicaragua/Guatemala, not with Cartago.
  • 1812–1814 and 1820–1821: the Cortes of Cádiz joined the Intendancy of León and Costa Rica into the Province of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Costa Rica depended on León for fiscal matters.
  • Church: Costa Rica belonged to the Diocese of León (Nicaragua). The archive of the Vicaría (foránea) de Cartago, which operated there from the late 16th century until 1851, passed to the Curia de San José in 1852 and is now in the AHABAT. [Guía AHABAT 2022]. The Diocese of San José was created in 1850: (approximate date; confirm with the archive), not verified.
  • 1821–1823: independence, annexation to the Mexican Empire (the ANCR has a collection "Anexión a México", 1821–1823), and then the United Provinces of Central America. Federation until its dissolution (ANCR "Federal" collection, 1820–1851).
  • 1823: the capital moved from Cartago to San José.
  • 25 July 1824: the Partido de Nicoya (now Guanacaste) joins Costa Rica by open town council (cabildo abierto).2
  • Provinces: the division into provinces and comarcas (Puntarenas, Limón) and the creation date of Guanacaste province are to be confirmed.
  • Which archive inherited what: the Archivo Nacional de Costa Rica (ANCR) holds the colonial government records of Cartago (collections Cartago, Complementario Colonial), copies and originals from the Captaincy General (collection "Guatemala", 1539–1821), protocols from 1602, probate files (mortuales) from 1641, the records of the branches of government, and the historical holdings of the Registro Civil (1888–1998). Most of the Audiencia’s records are in the AGCA (Guatemala), which has a "Costa Rica" section (microfilm rolls 1212B–1241B, about 30 rolls). Centralized church records are in the AHABAT.
  • Civil registration: the "Ley Orgánica y Reglamentaria del Registro Civil" has been in force since 1 January 1888. Since 1949 the Registro has been under the TSE. Before 1888, the only vital records are parish books, and secondary sources (probate files (mortuales), protocols, marriage files, census and tax lists (padrones)) substitute for or corroborate parentage. From 1913, acknowledgments of paternity, legitimations, and emancipations are recorded.3
  • Territories: Nicoya/Guanacaste passed from Nicaragua to Costa Rica, so for dates before 1824 it is worth also searching Nicaraguan sources and the AGCA.
  • Regional and local archives exist; researchers should find out what exists in the locality.

National archives and institutions

Only national archives and institutions and key foreign repositories are included. There are also regional, municipal, diocesan, and religious-order archives: find out what exists in your ancestor’s locality.
