Background and geography

  • Colonial period: Chile was a governorship and captaincy general within the Viceroyalty of Peru. First there was a Real Audiencia [Royal Court] in Concepción (created in 1565, dissolved by a royal decree of 1573 carried out in 1575). The Audiencia was reestablished in Santiago: it was approved in 1605 and installed on September 8, 1609. Its papers now make up the Real Audiencia fonds of the ANH (1600-1830). (Hispanopedia; ANH, 2022 chart.)
  • Chiloé: in 1768 the viceroy of Peru separated Chiloé from the Captaincy General and the Audiencia de Santiago. So for Chiloé in 1768-1826, also search Peruvian archives. (Hispanopedia.) That it depended directly on the viceroyalty and was reincorporated in 1826 is (approximate date; confirm with the archive); confirm with the archive.
  • Cuyo (Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis): it passed to the new Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776. For judicial matters, a royal decree of 1782 transferred it to the Audiencia de Buenos Aires, which was installed in 1785. Earlier Cuyo records remain in Santiago (Real Audiencia, Capitanía General, Escribanos); later ones are in Argentina. (Hispanopedia;
  • Intendancies (1786): the intendancies of Santiago and Concepción were created and the powers of the Audiencia were reduced. The ANH Intendencias fonds begins in 1789 (Coquimbo), and most series start in 1817-1818. (ANH, 2014 chart.)
  • Independence: the Audiencia was dissolved in 1811 and replaced by a Tribunal de Apelaciones [Court of Appeals]. It reopened during the Reconquista (1814/1815-1817) and was abolished in 1818; the Corte de Apelaciones de Santiago descends from it. Independence was declared in 1818. (Hispanopedia.)
  • The ANH also holds the Intendencias (23) and Gobernaciones (57, 1773-1954) fonds, plus first-instance court records by city. The details of the 1826 laws and the 1833 reforms are to be confirmed.
  • Which archive inherited what:
  • The Archivo Nacional Histórico (ANH, Miraflores 50) holds colonial records and republican records up to about 1900: Real Audiencia, Capitanía General, Contaduría Mayor, Escribanos de Santiago, ministries up to 1900, intendancies, governorships, town councils (cabildos), and court records.
  • The Archivo Nacional de la Administración (ARNAD, Matucana 151), created in 1992 as the “Archivo del Siglo XX”, holds the ministries from 1901, the notaries, the conservadores de bienes raíces [real estate registrars], and 20th-century military and civil courts.
  • The Archivo Nacional was founded on November 25, 1927, with predecessors in 1847 and 1887. (Hispanopedia; ANH 2014/2022 and ARNAD 2014 charts.)
  • War of the Pacific (1879-1884): Chile annexed Antofagasta (formerly Bolivian), Tarapacá (Peruvian), and Arica (Peruvian, under Chilean administration from 1883 to 1929). The ANH has a "Judicial Administrativo de Arica" fonds (1598-1893, 7 boxes). In the ARNAD, the notaries of Iquique (1864-1970) and Antofagasta (1879-1981) predate or coincide with the annexation. For Tacna, returned to Peru in 1929, consult Peruvian archives. The treaty dates (Ancón 1883, Bolivia 1904, Lima 1929) are (approximate date; confirm with the archive); confirm with the archive.
  • Araucanía: after the 19th-century “occupation”, there are series from 1887 (Notaries and Conservador of Temuco, 1887-1911). There is an Archivo Regional de la Araucanía in Temuco (outside the scope of this page).
  • Civil registration: in operation since 1885. FamilySearch has “Chile, Civil Registration, 1880-1933” (catalog 1630787), listed for reference only. Before 1885, researchers depend on parish registers and on secondary sources: notarial records, court records (probate (sucesiones)), census and tax lists (padrones) and censuses, and marriage files of the Archdiocese. After 1885, these sources help to corroborate and to find information that civil registration does not record (property, parentage of immigrants).
  • Censuses: the Oficina de Estadística [Statistics Office] deliberately destroyed the census manuscripts. Only name-level fragments from 1854, 1865, and 1907 survive, scattered in the Intendencias, Gobernaciones, and Interior fonds. (McCaa, LARR.)
  • Local archives: there are regional and local archives (for example Tarapacá, Araucanía, Atacama, and others being set up); researchers should find out what exists in the locality.
  • Treaty of Ancón (Chile and Peru): signed on 20 October 1883. Chile ratified it on 12-13 January 1884 and Peru on 8 March 1884. Article 2 ceded Tarapacá to Chile unconditionally. Article 3 left Tacna and Arica under Chilean administration for 10 years, after which a plebiscite was to be held; it never took place. (Wikipedia, "Treaty of Ancón"; Memoria Chilena, "Negociaciones diplomáticas", which gives "October 1883".)
  • Bolivia: first a Truce Pact was signed in 1884, and then the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Commerce on October 20, 1904, by which Antofagasta passed permanently to Chile. (Memoria Chilena, “Negociaciones diplomáticas”.)
  • Treaty of Lima (Chile and Peru), June 3, 1929: Tacna returned to Peru and Arica remained in Chile. (Memoria Chilena, “Negociaciones diplomáticas”.) Archival news: the ANH has an Intendencia de Tacna fonds (1858-1928, 32 volumes), covering the period of Chilean administration. There are also fonds of the Intendencias of Tarapacá (1880-1904) and Antofagasta (1879-1940). (ANH, 2026 summary chart.)
  • Civil registration: the first Civil Registry law was issued on July 17, 1884, and took effect, along with the Civil Marriage Law, on January 1, 1885. Entries are made in duplicate: the original book is kept by the Archivo Nacional del Registro Civil and the copy by the local office where the event took place. The Registry and Identification services merged in 1943. (Belmar Ruiz and Pérez Álvarez, Chile report, UN, about 1991.)
  • Historical archive of the Civil Registry: in 2010 the Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales declared the documents of the Archivo Histórico del Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación a Historic Monument. They are birth, marriage, and death entries from 1885 to 1981: about 33 million documents in more than 4,000 linear meters. The declaration was awaiting a supreme decree. (El Mostrador, September 10, 2010.)
  • Naturalization: DS 5.142 of October 13, 1960 (Ministry of the Interior) sets the consolidated text of the provisions on naturalization of foreigners. It consolidates Law 13.955 (July 9, 1960), DL 747 (December 15, 1925), and DS 3.690 (July 16, 1941). Article 9 requires the certificates to be entered in a “Rol de Cartas de esta clase” [register of such certificates], kept by the relevant section of the Ministry of the Interior. For this reason, 20th-century series should be searched in the Ministerio del Interior fonds at the ARNAD. (DS 5.142, at interior.gob.cl.) The 19th-century rules were not verified (incomplete search).
  • Colonial customs: in 1772 the Real Administración de Alcabalas y Almojarifazgos was established in Chile. In 1774 Governor Agustín de Jáuregui reorganized the customs service, with its main office in Santiago (“Administración de Aduanas o Administración Mayor de Alcabalas”). The Servicio Nacional de Aduanas cites files of the Real Aduana from 1782 and 1785 as “Documento 16662 [y 16663] del Archivo Nacional”. (Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, “Cronología desde el año 1497 a 2004”.)
  • Archivo Nacional: its founding date, 25 November 1927, is confirmed by two more sources (English Wikipedia; the portal of the Acervo Histórico Diplomático of Mexico’s SRE). The building at Miraflores 50 was built between 1915 and 1935, and the Archivo has occupied it since 1982 (English Wikipedia). See “Contradictions between sources”.

  • Archivo Nacional: structure and notarial records. The ARNAD holds, from 1600 on, the records of the "auxiliaries of the administration of justice: Notaries and Conservadores" and the courts; it brings together in a single repository all notarial records from the colonial period on. More than 27 km, 374 fonds, Cuadro Sinóptico as of June 30, 2026. This resolves the ANH/ARNAD contradiction about notaries.60
  • Archivo Nacional Histórico: history. Archivo General de Gobierno, June 21, 1887; Archivo Histórico Nacional by decree of May 30, 1925; Archivo Nacional by DFL 7.217 of November 25, 1927; DFL 5.200 of November 18, 1929 (DIBAM) adds copies of court judgments. ARNAD created November 12, 1992 (Archivo del Siglo XX; current name in 1997). Cuadro Sinóptico de Fondos 2026.61
  • Online catalogs. SINAR (sinarchile.archivonacional.gob.cl); "Bienes Raíces, Comercio y Minas" (documentos.archivonacional.cl: digitized entries that can be requested online with legalization; the site did not respond from Guatemala); Mapoteca (1,400 maps and plans, hacienda boundaries). Contradictions between sources

ItemOne source saysAnother source saysProposal
Location of notarial recordsThe ANH has no "Notarios" fonds; only Escribanos de Santiago 1559-1800 (ANH 2014/2022 charts)The ARNAD has Notarios de Santiago 1792-1930 and those of dozens of cities (ARNAD 2014 chart). The BYU guide (about 1998): copies from 1550 at the Archivo Nacional; after 1875, at the local notary offices; the "Archivo Siglo XX" has notary records from 1810.Present it as: colonial Santiago records at the ANH; republican and provincial records at the ARNAD. The BYU guide's 1875 cutoff is out of date. Confirm with the ARNAD.
Size of Escribanos de Santiago973 books (ANH chart)"About 900 volumes" (Memoria Chilena, "Escribanías")Use the custodian's figure (973).
Reestablishment of the Audiencia1605 (the date often cited)Approved in 1605 and installed on September 8, 1609 (Hispanopedia)Write "approved 1605, installed 1609".
Cuyo1776 (transfer to the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata)Judicial transfer by royal decree of 1782 and Audiencia of Buenos Aires in 1785 (Hispanopedia)Give both dates: 1776 political, 1782-85 judicial.
End of the Audiencia1811 (dissolution) / 1817 (end of the reopening)1818, final abolition (Hispanopedia)Explain the three stages.
Dates of the FS cemetery collection1701-2021 (current title, FS 1428897)1821-2015 (catalog record "COLLECTION RECORD")Cite the current title and note the actual dates of each catalog entry.
Linear meters of Intendencias480.30 m (ANH 2014 chart)473.22 m (2022 chart; the total row shows "4.733,22")Use 2022 and point out the typo.
Passports 1873-1974At the Archivo Nacional (BYU guide, Emigration section)The same guide, in its list of addresses, associates them with the Biblioteca Nacional, as "fondos varios de los archivos nacionales"To be confirmed: ask the ANH or the ARNAD.
Notarial records at the FHL"The FHL has no Chilean notarial records" (BYU guide, about 1998)Not cross-checked (the current FS catalog could not be searched)Still open. Three different web searches turned up no FS catalog entry for Chilean protocols: the only "Protocolos" found (catalog 348888) is from Guatemala, and catalog 752676 ("Protocolos, 1929-1930") requires signing in, so we could not see what place it covers. Check with the browser.
Term of the AHAS card7 business days (text of the rules)10 business days (services table in the same rules)State "7 to 10 business days".
Founding and building of the Archivo NacionalNovember 25, 1927; building completed in 1939 (Hispanopedia)Building constructed between 1915 and 1935; the Archive moved there in 1982 (Wikipedia on IPFS)Partly resolved: November 25, 1927 is also confirmed by English Wikipedia and the portal of Mexico's SRE. On the building, English Wikipedia agrees with version B (1915-1935; occupied since 1982). Use "1927" for the founding; for the building, still check the "Historia" page at archivonacional.gob.cl.
Start dates of ARNAD notary recordsLa Serena 1579, Talca 1601, Quillota 1619 (ARNAD 2014 chart, extracted text)Talca was founded in the 18th century, and Memoria Chilena says there was no notary office in Aconcagua until the late 18th century; these early dates are unlikelyPartly resolved: on rereading the source, the dates appear literally in the custodian's chart ("La Serena 1579 – 1932", "Talca 1601 – 1926", "Quillota 1619 – 1931"), as does Quirihue 1608-1933, which is just as unlikely. It is not an extraction error. Cite the custodian's dates with "[sic]" and a note: "probably earlier loose documents inserted, or a typo; confirm with the ARNAD".
Dates of the Ministerio de Marina fonds (ANH)1823-1900, 1,145 volumes (ANH 2026 chart)1817-1900, 1,145 volumes (Arriagada, Academia de Historia Militar, 2023)Use the custodian's date (1823-1900).
Volume counts of ANH fonds2014/2022 charts: Real Audiencia 3,252; Capitanía General 1,064; Contaduría Mayor 2nd series 3,695; Ministerio de Guerra 2,952; Intendencias 23 fonds, 11,3242026 chart: 3,254; 1,071; 3,697; 2,955; 24 fonds, 11,343 volumes and 474.12 mNot a substantive contradiction but an update. Always cite "ANH 2026 chart (May 15, 2026)".
Cost of conservador copies$300 per page side, plus $300 in fees per page side and $500 per signature (ChileAtiende 143966, "Copia autorizada…")$3,000 per page side and $500 per signature (ChileAtiende 30768, "Certificado de dominio vigente"), in addition to buying the certified copyThese are different procedures: certified copy and certificate of current ownership. Explain both and confirm current amounts on the portal, because neither record has an update date.
