Context and geography

  • 1559. The Real Audiencia de Charcas [Royal Audiencia of Charcas] is created, seated in La Plata (now Sucre), within the Viceroyalty of Peru. Its records (1561–1825) are the core of the national archive. (v) The RALP fonds covers 1561–1825 and was inscribed in the Memory of the World Register (2011).
  • 1776. Charcas passes to the new Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. From then on, records of the higher government are split among Lima, Buenos Aires, and Seville (AGI, sección Charcas).
  • 1782–1784. The intendancy system: La Plata (Charcas), Potosí, La Paz, and Cochabamba, plus the governorships of Moxos and Chiquitos. Royal treasury (cajas reales) and town council (cabildo) records stayed in the main towns. (v) The Cabildo Secular de Potosí (1585–1817) is at the ABNB. The Cajas Reales de Potosí are at the Casa Nacional de Moneda.
  • August 6, 1825. Independence. The capital is Sucre. (v) The National Library was created in 1825.
  • October 18, 1883. (v) A law creates the Archivo Nacional de Bolivia from the records of the Real Audiencia. November 28, 1898. (v) A law creates an Archivo General de la Nación for executive and legislative papers, but it never operated. After the Federal War (1898–1899), the seat of government moved to La Paz. That is why republican-era records are now split among Sucre (ABNB), La Paz (Legislative Assembly, ministries, Archivo de La Paz), and the departments. (v) 1936: the National Archive and the National Library merge to form the ABNB. 1986: the ABNB passes to the Banco Central de Bolivia. 1995: it passes to the Fundación Cultural del BCB.
  • 1971. (v) The UMSA stops more than 20 tons of colonial and republican records from La Paz from being sold as scrap paper. Supreme Decree DS 9777 (June 15, 1971) places them in its custody. This is the origin of the Archivo de La Paz (ALP), which holds records of the Prefectura and the Corte Superior de La Paz. (v) The Prefectura’s census and tax lists (padrones) stayed in the Prefectura offices until 1976.
  • Territorial losses. The Litoral (Antofagasta/Atacama) was lost in the War of the Pacific (1879–1884), with a truce in 1884 and a treaty in 1904. Acre went to Brazil under the Treaty of Petrópolis (1903). Part of the Chaco went to Paraguay after the war (1932–1935) and the 1938 treaty. For these territories, republican-era padrones and revisitas from before the loss are in Bolivia. (v) Example: ABNB, Tribunal Nacional de Cuentas, revisitas of the province of Atacama from 1840, 1846, and 1851.
  • Civil registration. (v) The law was enacted on November 26, 1898, and its regulations date from 1900. It was poorly enforced: the service operated nationwide only from January 1, 1940, after the decrees of December 15 and 29, 1939. (v) In 1992 (Law 1367) it passed to the Corte Nacional Electoral. Since 2009–2010 it has been run by SERECI, part of the Órgano Electoral Plurinacional. Effect on sources: until 1940, parish registers are in practice the main vital source. Padrones, revisitas, deeds, and court files fill or corroborate the gaps in those registers.
  • Regional and local archives. Regional and local archives exist. Researchers should find out what exists in the locality.

Only national archives and institutions and key foreign repositories are included. There are also regional, municipal, diocesan, and religious-order archives: find out what exists in your ancestor’s locality.
