Context and geography

  • Early colonial period (16th-17th centuries). The territory of present-day Argentina belonged to the Virreinato del Perú [Viceroyalty of Peru]. It had three units: the Gobernación del Tucumán (northwest and center: Tucumán, Córdoba, Salta, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero, Catamarca, La Rioja), the Gobernación del Río de la Plata (Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Corrientes; separated from Paraguay in 1617), and the Corregimiento de Cuyo (Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis). Cuyo belonged to the Captaincy General of Chile until 1776, so its colonial records from before that date may be in Chilean archives. (General context; dates still to be confirmed in an academic source.)
  • Audiencias. Most of the territory fell under the judicial authority of the Audiencia de Charcas (seated in La Plata/Sucre, now Bolivia). A first Real Audiencia de Buenos Aires [Royal Audiencia of Buenos Aires] existed from 1661 to 1671, with jurisdiction over Río de la Plata, Paraguay, and Tucumán. The second one operated from 1783 to 1810 and was abolished in 1813. It covered the intendancies of Buenos Aires, Córdoba del Tucumán, Salta del Tucumán, and Paraguay, plus Misiones and Montevideo (Wikipedia, "Real Audiencia of Buenos Aires"). Appeals from before 1783 should be searched in the Charcas records (Archivo y Biblioteca Nacionales de Bolivia, Sucre) and in the AGI.
  • Virreinato del Río de la Plata [Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata]. It was created on 1 August 1776. The Real Ordenanza de Intendentes (1782) organized Argentine territory into the intendancies of Buenos Aires, Córdoba del Tucumán, and Salta del Tucumán. The others (Paraguay, Potosí, Charcas, Cochabamba, La Paz) lay outside the present country. The AGN holds the records of the Virrey y Secretaría de Cámara (1759-1810) and of the Secretaría de la Gobernación e Intendencia de Buenos Aires (1605/1729-1821) (AGN, colonial guide 2011).
  • 1810-1862. The May Revolution (1810) was followed by the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and Independence (1816). From 1820 there was no central government. Each province was autonomous and had its own archive. The Constitution of 1853 created the Argentine Confederation, with its capital in Paraná. The State of Buenos Aires was separate from 1852 to 1861. Unification came in 1862, after the Battle of Pavón (1861). For this reason, the AGN mainly holds records of the Buenos Aires government from 1810 to 1862, not those of the other provinces. The AGN guide states that the bulk covers "desde 1810 hasta Pavón (1861)" [from 1810 to Pavón (1861)].
  • The AGN was founded on 28 August 1821 as the Archivo General de la Provincia de Buenos Aires and was federalized on 29 August 1884. This explains why its 19th-century holdings are mostly from Buenos Aires (AGN, "La institución").
  • 1880-1955. In 1880 the city of Buenos Aires was federalized and became the Federal Capital. The province moved its capital to La Plata (1882), and later provincial records are there. In 1884 the national territories were created (Chaco, Formosa, Misiones, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego). They became provinces between 1951 and 1955 (Tierra del Fuego in 1990-1991). While they were territories, the national government produced their administrative records, so these may be in the AGN or its Archivo Intermedio. (Territory dates: general context, to be confirmed.)
  • Civil registration. Each province introduced it separately. In the Capital it began in 1886 (according to the CJH, "agosto de 1886"), and according to the FHL/BYU guide most provinces had it running by 1900. Before those dates, the 1869 and 1895 censuses, probate (sucesiones), and notarial records (protocols) are the main civil sources for reconstructing families.
  • Territories that went to other countries: Upper Peru (Bolivia), Paraguay, the Banda Oriental (Uruguay, 1828), and Tarija. The Audiencia of Buenos Aires at one point included Montevideo. Colonial records from Buenos Aires may contain census and tax lists (padrones) and case files from those areas.
  • Record losses. On 16 June 1955 the Curia Metropolitana de Buenos Aires burned, along with its Archivo Histórico. The current archdiocesan archive holds records from 1956 on. Immigrant lists from 1870 to 1882/1888 were also lost (see “Contradictions between sources”).
  • Cuyo (nuance corrected). When the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was created, Cuyo came under its jurisdiction "as part of the Intendancy of Córdoba del Tucumán". Fernández links the transfer to two events: the creation of the viceroyalty (1776) and the application of the Real Ordenanza de Intendentes, which he dates to 1783. He adds that the change did not cut Cuyo’s ties with the Kingdom of Chile, so searching Chilean archives is still worthwhile for dates after 1776 (Fernández, Fronteras de la Historia, 2023). The original gives 1782 for the Ordenanza: that is the year it was issued, and 1783 the year it was applied (see “Contradictions between sources”).
  • National territories. Ley 1532 (1884) created nine territories on the North American model: Chaco, Formosa, Misiones, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. The Territorio de Los Andes was added in 1900 and existed until 1943. The territories became provinces as follows: Chaco and La Pampa in 1951; Misiones in 1953; Formosa, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz in 1955; Tierra del Fuego in 1990 (Ruffini, "Los territorios nacionales"). This gives a citation for the original line, which was previously "general context." The numbers of the provincialization laws are still To be confirmed.
  • Civil registration in the Capital and the territories. Ley 1565, of 31 October 1884, required the municipalities of the Capital and the national territories to set up civil registration offices within six months (Pirota et al., national report to the UN, c. 1992). In the City of Buenos Aires the law "entró en vigencia … en agosto de 1886" [took effect … in August 1886] (Población de Buenos Aires 15, 2012). The provinces passed their own laws, and the date for the province of Buenos Aires is still To be confirmed.
  • National courts and probate. The archive of the Poder Judicial de la Nación [national judiciary] grew out of the archive of the Cabildo de Buenos Aires. Ley 1144 (1881) ordered a general inventory of civil cases. Ley 14.242 (1953) moved it to the Ministry of Justice, and Ley 17.779 (1968) returned it to the judiciary. Probate files were sent to the AGN, generally up to 1900. So 19th-century Buenos Aires probate (sucesiones) is searched in the AGN, and later files in the courts (Acuña Mufarrege, Hilos Documentales, 2025).
  • Citizenship papers (cartas de ciudadanía). Under Ley 346 (1869), art. 6, citizenship is granted by "el juez federal de sección ante quien la hubiesen solicitado" [the federal district judge before whom it was requested]. For this reason the files are spread among the federal courts of each jurisdiction, not kept in a central archive. Decreto 3213/84 (art. 20) mentions a "Registro de Cartas de Naturalización y de Ciudadanía," created by de facto law 21.795, whose records were to be transferred to the Cámara Nacional Electoral (consolidated text of Ley 346, HCDN).

Contradictions between sources

AGN location and hoursAlem 246; Mon-Fri 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (EHRI) or 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (JewishGen 2000)Rondeau 2277 for colonial, 19th-century, and photo holdings; Paseo Colón 1093 for the 20th century; Alem 246 for the Library only; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. by appointment (AGN, FAQ)Use the AGN version (High). EHRI and JewishGen are out of date
Founding date of the AGN28 August 1821 (AGN, "La institución")21 August 1821 (Wikipedia infobox)Use 28 August (custodian)
Range of the arrivals database1882-1926 (JewishGen 2000, CEMLA); 1882-1937 (AGN); 1882-1950 (DNM traveling exhibit); 1882-1953 (Museo de la Inmigración); 1882-1960 (CJH, CEMLA)—One more version is added: "entre 1800 hasta 1960" [from 1800 to 1960] for the CEMLA search tool (La Capital de Mar del Plata, 2022). Keep the proposal: give the range for each platform and check at cemla.com/buscador
Lost passenger lists1870-1882 (JewishGen)1870-1888 (FHL/BYU)To be confirmed; ask the AGN
Early passenger lists1821-15 May 1869 (JewishGen)Entradas y salidas 1821-1871 (FHL title, BYU)Check the exact title in the FS catalog
1914 censusExists only at the AGN, not microfilmed (FHL/BYU)20th-century censuses have only statistical data (apellidositalianos); INDEC holds anonymized data (JewishGen)Unresolved. New information: MyHeritage Wiki says the 1914 schedules are "stored" at the AGN with "limited access", but on the same page it states that 1869 and 1895 are "the only ones fully preserved with individual data" . Three searches found no academic or AGN source. This remains a direct question for the AGN
1955 losses"Se quemó el Archivo Histórico con las partidas de nacimiento, matrimonio y muerte" [the Archivo Histórico burned, with the birth, marriage, and death records] of the Curia, from the late 16th century (Wikipedia)The parish registers of La Merced (1635-1860) survived with water damage (Notife 2004); FamilySearch has Catholic records for the Federal Capital 1640-1978The Curia’s archive was lost (marriage files, dispensations, copies); the registers kept in the parishes largely survived
Start of civil registrationBegan in August 1886 (CJH)The law was passed in 1886 (FHL/BYU)Resolved: national Ley 1565 is dated 31 October 1884 and applies to the Capital and the national territories (Pirota et al.); in the City of Buenos Aires it took effect in August 1886 (Población de Buenos Aires, 2012). The FHL/BYU "1886" confuses the law with its implementation. Each province had its own law; the date for Buenos Aires province is still To be confirmed
Attribution of the Actas de Inspección serviceThe article’s lead attributes it to the DNMThe body of the article cites the AGN (El Cronista)Custodian: AGN
Date of the Real Ordenanza de Intendentes1782 (original report, AGN)1783 (Fernández 2023, as the date of application in Cuyo)Not a real contradiction: it was issued in 1782 and applied in 1783. Use "1782 (applied from 1783)"
